In this post, we’re going to introduce you to a simple yet powerful solution: a script made to address the latest AVD pooled host pools challenges. This script is available for every XOAP user, and if you’re not one yet (What are you waiting for? 👀), join our community today and experience the difference firsthand. 

The script is designed to be used with our Scripted Actions feature that supports automation scripts based on PowerShell. But here’s the best part – this script is just one example of Scripted Actions capabilities. You can also (not only):

  • Create Azure Application groups for Azure Host Pools,
  • Create Azure Virtual Desktop Host Pools,
  • Update Azure Virtual Desktop Host Pools,
  • Create Azure Virtual Desktop workspaces, and
  • Delete Azure Image Builder templates and the corresponding Azure Resource groups.

Problem with AVD pooled host pools?

You might be facing some common problems due to the enforcement of the Preferred App Group Type setting:

  • System slow or unresponsive due to too many users;
  • Users unable to log in;
  • Frequent connection failures;
  • Black screens;
  • Application crashes.

Our script offers a straightforward fix. By changing the host pool’s Preferred App Group Type, it effectively balances the workload, optimizes logins, improves connection and application stability and prevents black screens.
 

It updates an Azure Virtual Desktop Host Pool and uses the Azure CLI command.

Here's how to solve it quickly

To proceed with the following, create your free account (we won’t ask for credit card details). This way, you’re able to use our Scripted Actions feature needed to solve your problem. Done? Great, let’s continue.

Start creating a new Scripted Action. In Step 1 out of 3, define the details and add this script from Resources: az-cli-update-avd-hostpool.ps1. Click “Next”.

In Step 2, edit script parameters. Choose your “AzResourceGroupName”, “AzHostPoolName” and “AzTags”.  Then, select the “Desktop” or “RemoteApp” value for the “AzPreferredAppGroupType” parameter.

Now you can move on to Step 3 to define a connection. Use the correct connection type based on the script you are using. In case you didn’t add a connection before, just click + to do so. After that, click “Finish”.

When you’re done creating a new Scripted Action, you can run it. See how to do that in our Scripted Actions guide. 📝

Depending on the selection, after running the Scripted Action, the Preferred App Group Type for a specific Host Pool (as defined in the “AzHostPoolName” parameter) will be set to either “Desktop” or “RemoteApp.”

Things can quickly get complex when applying or maintaining different configurations, or installing and managing various application sets and user configurations.

How to easily deploy images for AVD with XOAP

Combining application, configuration, and image management modules, XOAP makes it easy to create, maintain, and deploy images for AVDs without any coding or scripting requirements.

Before we guide you through our step-by-step tutorial, create a free account. 

After that, log in to your Workspace and switch to the “Connections” area. Prepare the credentials needed to connect to your Azure tenant: 

Tenant ID = TenantId

Subscription ID = SubscriptionId

Client ID = CLientId

Client Key Secret = ClientSecret

Step 1 

Click on + to add a new connection. Fill in all needed information and click “Save” to add the new connection.

Once the connection is created, you can start with creating images in Image Management.

In your workspace in Image Management, switch to the Roles area, you can find a pre–created role for AVD called Azure Virtual Desktops (W11). In this role, you can find some basic provisioner groups for OS optimization, OS updates, AVD prerequisites, and some applications.

Step 3

In case you need to upload your existing scripts, install different applications, or maybe upload specific files on your AVD image, use the Resources, Provisioners, and Groups area under Image Management to add new resources and create new groups and provisioners.

Once your AVD Role is ready go to the Operating System, check if the base operating system you want to use is already in the list. If not, click “+” to add a new OS base image configuration. Fill all the data in the “Add Operating System” window and click “Save”.

Step 4

The next step is the configuration of the Builder Configurations. Go to Builder Configurations and click “+” to add a new “Builder Configuration”. Fill all the necessary data in the “Add Builder” window with your values.

The last step before your first image run is to add the image configuration with all the previous options. Go to the Images under Image Management, and click “+” to add an image.

In the “Add Image” window specify the required and desired information. Then click “Save” when you are done.

Now you are ready to run the image creation. Click on the gear icon and choose “Run”.

Step 7

Depending on the number of configurations, reboots, Windows Updates and applications, this can take a while. Follow the building process by hitting the “Runs” button.

Once the run is finished, the image will be added to your Azure subscription, and you’ll be ready to create a new Host Pool in your Azure infrastructure. You’ll see that every image run creates a new versioned image so you can identify which image was created last.
