One of the longest-standing pain points for administrators managing Entra-joined devices is finally being addressed. Starting with Windows Insider build 27881, Microsoft has introduced a long-awaited improvement: Windows can now automatically translate Entra group and Intune role SIDs (like Device Administrators and Company Administrators) into readable names — directly on the device.

The mysterious S-1-12-1 SIDs

If you’ve ever added an Entra group or Intune role to a local Windows group, you probably noticed that instead of a clear name, you were greeted with a cryptic S-1-12-1-xxxx SID.

While Entra users have been properly resolved for years, Entra groups and built-in roles were simply invisible to the Windows local identity system. Even critical roles like “Device Administrators” would just appear as “Unknown Account,” leaving admins guessing who actually had elevated privileges.

To make sense of those SIDs, admins relied on PowerShell scripts or community tools, since Windows itself couldn’t ask Entra who those identities really were.

What’s new in Windows Insider Build 27881

Microsoft has quietly filled that long-missing gap with a new feature known internally as AADSidToNameV2Support.
This enhancement expands the existing SID-to-name lookup process, which previously handled Entra users, to now include groups and roles as well.

Here´s what that means in practice: when Windows encounters an unfamiliar Entra SID – whether a user, group, or role – it now follows a smarter resolution process.

Check the local cache: Windows first looks for the SID in the local identity cache.

Ask Entra if necessary: If it´s not cached, Windows securely queries Entra to identify who that SID belongs to.

Cache the result: Once resolved, the translated name is stored locally so it appears instantly next time – even offline.

This entire process happens quietly in the background, using secure authentication between the device and Entra. The translation data lives under the registry path:


HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IdentityStore\Cache\<SID>\IdentityCache

Under the hood, Windows reaches out to a new Entra endpoint:
https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>/sidtoname 


Windows builds a device-signed JSON Web Token (JWT) proving its identity and includes the unknown SID in the request. Entra responds with the corresponding identity name and display information. If the lookup succeeds, Windows updates its local cache – meaning the SID will appear correctly from that point forward. If the lookup fails, the SID remains as-is until it can be resolved.

Backward compatibility with NT4-style names

Some legacy Windows components still expect the classic DOMAIN\User format. To support these, Windows automatically generates a compatible alias (for example, AzureAD\GroupName) using a background process called GenAndPersistNT4StyleName. This makes sure that Entra identities can be displayed consistently across both modern and legacy Windows interfaces.

Before and after: What you’ll see

With the feature disabled, the local Administrators group might show entries like:

S-1-12-1-1234567890-987654321-…

Once AADSidToNameV2Support is enabled, those same entries appear as:

Device Administrators
Company Administrators
apv2_users

In other words, Entra groups and roles now appear exactly as you expect them to – human-readable, accurate, and instantly recognizable.

Why this change matters

This improvement isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about clarity, manageability, and security. Easier administration – No more guessing which SID corresponds to which Entra group. Better policy targeting – Intune and security baselines can now correctly identify and apply settings to named Entra groups. Improved troubleshooting – Admins can instantly see which cloud identities have local privileges, reducing confusion and potential misconfigurations.

For now, this enhancement is exclusive to Insider builds and hasn’t yet rolled out to the general release versions of Windows 11 (24H2 or 25H2). But it’s a clear signal that Windows is becoming fully Entra-aware, closing the gap between local and cloud identity management.

The bottom line

After years of seeing unintelligible SIDs in the local Administrators group, Windows finally understands Entra identities natively. With AADSidToNameV2Support, Microsoft is delivering what admins have been asking for all along: a readable and accurate view of who’s who on a device – no scripts or workarounds required.

Windows is finally learning to speak Entra fluently and that’s a big win for every IT admin managing cloud-connected devices.

What’s changing?

The Windows 11 Security Baseline integrates best practices from the Centre for Internet Security (CIS) and Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) from the latest October release.

This quick and simple tutorial will guide you through finding, modifying, and assigning the Windows 11 Security Baseline in XOAP.

How to use the Windows 11 Security Baseline in XOAP

Step 1: Locate the Windows 11 Security Baseline

Log in to your XOAP account. Navigate to Configuration Management → Configurations. Use the search bar to find Windows 11 Security Baseline.

Step 2: Modify and save a new version (optional)

The baseline is pre-configured with best practices, but you can adjust settings to fit your organization’s needs:

Open the configuration and make the necessary changes. Save it as a new version to preserve both the original and updated configurations. This allows flexibility; you can switch between different security configurations as needed.

Extend it with all common modules available in your XOAP account under Configuration Management → Modules, or extend the configuration with self-created modules or Group Policy settings.

Step 3: Assign the Security Baseline to systems

To apply this security configuration to your systems. Go to Groups in XOAP and choose an existing group or create a new group. Click Edit and assign the newly saved configuration version to the group.

Once assigned, all connected systems in that group will automatically receive the updated security baseline.

With fines up to €10,000,000 and punishments for C-suite executives, as well as national laws already in place, the EU-wide NIS2 Directive on cybersecurity requires all essential and important entities to comply with numerous provisions.

While the national categorization of organizations will be finalized by April 2025, essential sectors already identified for active supervision will include Energy, Transport, Health, Digital infrastructure, ICT-service management and Banking, among others. Entities in important sectors such as Food, Post/Courier and Digital providers will be supervised after an incident of non-compliance.

After receiving categorizations, organizations will have a one-year harmonization period to become compliant with the Directive. 

❗Most importantly, the Directive extends to the supply chain, meaning that an ICT vendor or other service provider, even if not directly targeted, will still need to be NIS2-compliant.

Also, companies based outside of the EU but offering critical services within the EU fall under the scope of the NIS2 Directive too.

What does this mean in practice?

In addition to implementing a required risk management framework, categorized organizations will need to:

• Report incidents to national monitoring bodies and customers.
• Manage and monitor configurations, including security settings.
• Apply security patches from trusted sources within a reasonable timeframe.
• Manage changes in IT systems.
• Undergo audits.

With the NIS2 “consider everything” approach, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Safeguarding sensitive data is more crucial than ever, particularly as organizations increasingly rely on mobile devices and remote work environments. Among the array of security measures available, BitLocker stands out as a powerful encryption tool designed to protect data stored on Windows devices. However, many organizations face challenges in effectively deploying and managing BitLocker across their systems.

You can streamline the deployment of BitLocker using XOAP’s Configuration Management module. Configuration Management simplifies the implementation of BitLocker through Desired State Configuration (DSC), allowing IT administrators to automate and standardize encryption across managed devices.

DSC ensures that systems remain compliant with organizational policies, reducing the risk of misconfigurations and ensuring that all devices are appropriately protected.

In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of implementing and managing BitLocker on Windows 10/11 (client solution) and Windows 2022 Datacenter (server solution).

With XOAP, you can begin the deployment process immediately. Simply create a free XOAP account and follow the steps below.

Windows 10 and 11 (Client solution)

To encrypt a virtual machine disk using BitLocker, first you will need to enable Trusted Platform Module (TMP) in Hyper-V Manager.

To do this, open the VM settings and click on Security. In the Encryption Support section, check the Enable Trusted Platform Module box. Click here for detailed instructions.

Moving on to Configuration Management. If you haven’t yet, create a free XOAP account and go to your Workspace. In Configuration Management, create a new configuration or open an existing one.

Click Add resources.

Select XOAPBitlockerDSC and add EnableBitlocker-DSC resource from XOAPBitlockerDSC-Module.

Save your configuration.

If the configuration is saved and compiled (this might take a few moments), you will see your DSC resources when you click on the View code option in your configuration.

Now, go to Groups in Configuration Management and create a new group or choose an existing one.

In the Edit group screen, attach your configuration for BitLocker to that group.

Download the group registration script and run it on your machine.

Bitlocker Recovery Key will now be stored within your Microsoft Entra (if your device is already joined) and locally on the second drive you chose in the configuration. 

 

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (Server solution)

For the server solution, first you will need to install prerequisites with the PSDesiredStateConfiguration resources.

Specifically, you’ll need to enable the WindowsFeature and WindowsFeature RSAT-Feature-Tools-Bitlocker. These features are essential for ensuring that BitLocker operates effectively on your Windows Server 2022 Datacenter environment.

In XOAP, this will involve setting up two distinct DSC resources: one for the WindowsFeature and another for the RSAT-Feature-Tools-Bitlocker WindowsFeature. See screenshots below.

Please note:

• If you need to encrypt the system drive (e.g., C), you should use the DSC resource xBLBitLocker from our module as done here.

• To automatically enable BitLocker on fixed or removable drives, you should use the DSC resource xBLAutoBitLocker from our module. It does not work on operating system drives, but requires the OS to be encrypted. If you have multiple drives, use both DSC resources as done here.

Finalizing the configuration

Once you’ve completed your BitLocker configuration and linked it to a group within Configuration Management, download the group registration script associated with your BitLocker configuration.

Run the script on your machine, and after the required reboots, your drives should be successfully encrypted by BitLocker. ✅

Outcome

Windows 10 and 11 (Client solution).

If the device is joined to the work (or school) organization’s Microsoft Entra ID, then the VM and the BitlockerKey will be stored in My Account > Devices area.

Backing up the Recovery Key is essential for ensuring you can regain access to your data. You can do this using the Windows option available in the Manage BitLocker settings.

We have all witnessed recent incidents that underscore the inherent fragility of IT systems.

First, let me express my understanding of the trust placed in security agents deeply integrated within the OS to bolster system security. These agents, provided by reputable vendors, undergo rigorous testing to minimize potential issues, especially in high-impact scenarios.

However, despite our best efforts and the most stringent procedural tests, issues can still arise. After all, we are human, and errors are an inevitable part of our reality. I sympathize deeply with those affected by such incidents, recognizing the immense pressure and responsibility they bear.

Incidents like this occur daily in various organizations, often on a smaller scale due to auto-updates.

We must take a step back and consider how we can mitigate these issues in the future.

While it might be tempting to lay all the blame on CrowdStrike, it’s essential to remember that both companies and end-users share the responsibility for minimizing the impact of such incidents.

Here are several key points to consider.

🗃 The organizational perspective

First and foremost, establish robust testing stages. Implement processes to thoroughly test updates in automated environments before deploying them to production. When it comes to backup, implementing comprehensive backup strategies is critical in ensuring critical data and systems are backed up across multiple versions and locations.

In the event of total failure, you will need a clear, automated plan for redeploying your entire infrastructure. Develop redeployment plans and avoid the pitfall of treating server setup as a one-time task—automation is crucial. Moreover, pay attention to desktop readiness. Leverage available solutions to ensure desktops can be restored and operational within hours.

If you haven’t yet, adopt contemporary deployment methodologies and agile practices. Following incidents, conduct thorough postmortem analyses to identify and implement improvements.

 

💻 The technical perspective

Avoid “latest” and auto-updates on critical systems. While convenient, these can introduce unforeseen issues, so exercise caution.

Testing should be done in controlled environments. Deploy nothing to production without thorough testing in a staging environment. Testing should also be done regularly. Conduct regular, comprehensive tests of your automation and deployment processes—not just annually.

To ensure rapid deployment in disaster scenarios, automate your infrastructure as much as possible and consider implementing automated testing. Testing processes enhanced with automation will catch issues early. For quicker recovery and reduced attack surfaces, transition critical infrastructure to containers and Kubernetes. Simultaneous failures can be mitigated by distributing infrastructure and critical components across multiple cloud providers and geographical locations.

When it comes to standby snapshots, go cold. Maintain replicated, versioned snapshots of crucial backend systems and data as cold standby, since hot standby can replicate corrupted data.

And last but not the least, rethink your security measures. Explore innovative security solutions that reduce dependency on full-blown desktops.

Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) allows you to access your work applications and desktops from any device, whether you’re at home, in the office or on the go. It connects your computer or device to the servers where your work information and programs are stored, making sure everything runs smoothly and remains secure.

VDAs are installed on the machines (either physical or virtual) that host your work apps and desktops. This software uses advanced technology to provide a high-quality experience and manages your work sessions to connect and stay connected easily. Whether you’re accessing a full desktop or just a particular application, VDAs make it possible.

The main benefits of using Citrix VDAs include the ability to work remotely with the flexibility to use various devices, increased security by centralizing your data and easier IT management thanks to centralized control of applications and desktops. VDAs are available in two types: Desktop VDAs for accessing full virtual desktops and Server VDAs for accessing shared desktops or specific applications.

In this blog, we’ll show you how to solve the latest security issue for Citrix Windows Virtual Delivery Agent. Take a look. ⬇

What you need to do first

To set up a VDA, you need to install the software on the machine hosting your applications or desktops and connect it to the Citrix server that manages everything. You also need to configure settings and policies through a central management tool. VDAs are compatible with various versions of Windows and Linux operating systems, but you’ll need sufficient CPU, memory and storage, along with a reliable and fast internet connection for optimal performance.

Currently, there’s an open Security Bulletin CVE-2024-6151 for Citrix Windows Virtual Delivery Agent.

The vulnerability affects the following supported versions of Windows Virtual Delivery Agent:

Current Release (CR)

  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops versions before 2402

Long Term Service Release (LTSR)

  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 1912 LTSR before CU9
  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 LTSR before CU5

To resolve these security issues, you need to upgrade to one of the following versions:

Current Release (CR)

  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2402 and later versions

Long Term Service Release (LTSR)

  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 1912 LTSR CU9 and later cumulative updates
  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 LTSR CU5 and later cumulative updates
  •     Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2402 LTSR

Tackle the security issue with XOAP

One of the easiest ways to install a new version of the VDA is to use XOAP. We’re providing installation packages for VDA Workstation, VDA Workstation Core and VDA server.

Step 1: In your XOAP workspace navigate to Application Management > Groups, find the needed VDA group and in the action menu click on Edit.

Step 2: This will open the group editing window. Expand the application installation settings and configure them as needed. When you’re done, click Save.

Step 3: Then navigate to Configuration Management > Groups. Find the corresponding group with the assigned application role and click on the action menu and select “Copy registration command”.

Step 4: Log in to your machine, run PowerShell as administrator and insert the registration command from the clipboard. This will apply the configuration, download the assigned applications and install them on your machine.

The registration script can be run on multiple machines in case you need to do a mass deployment.

It’s important to stay updated with the latest version of Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) to address security concerns, meet compliance and industry standards and benefit from improved stability and performance.
